About Fasting

Fasting has been practised throughout history for religious, spiritual, and cultural reasons, but as a way of eating it goes back much further.

If we look back in time at our ancestors, they had regular periods of enforced fasting. Hunter-gatherers didn’t have the ability to store surplus food supplies in a pantry or refrigerator – something we take for granted in the modern world. They only had access to food when it was available in their immediate environment.

At times throughout the year when the food supply was interrupted, they had to rely on the fat stores in their own body for survival, and their body would easily make the metabolic switch from using food as a primary source of energy, to burning stored fat instead.

But nowadays we are constantly exposed to plentiful foods, we also lead far less active lives, and our bodies are no longer as efficient at making the metabolic switch to burning stored fat for energy. That’s where fasting comes in, and why intermittent fasting has become so popular. Fasting is a simple and effective way to train your body to become more metabolically flexible and to get better at burning fat.
